The early season start, and another slate of 22 allowed games, combines for destination Saturday showcases throughout the state in the first weekend of December.
Lots of cool Macomb County crossovers here in the MAC Champions of Champions, starting at 12 pm with Port Huron Northern in the post-Mr. Basketball era against Warren Cousino; Grosse Pointe South down to one college guard in Lake State-bound Karter Richards against the state’s No. 2 Division 2 team and their two D1 college guards Markus and Moses Blackwell; two talented senior point guards Utica’s Mason Brodi and Utica Eisenhower’s Braden Buza; and young talent with Port Huron against host Center Line with 6-7 junior Terez Holmes.
The Horatio Williams Tipoff Classic has a loaded field as always, with six games starting at 12:30 pm. Highlights include 2026 All-American import Elijah Williams in his first week for Brother Rice against Detroit University Prep; old school downriver, River Rouge, against the school with the state’s highest enrollment, East Kentwood; three D1 senior guards when host North Farmington and Landon Williams (Niagara) and Tyler Spratt (Cleveland State) play Detroit King and Chas Lewless (San Diego); and the state’s No. 2 Division 1 team, East Lansing, in the nightcap against what could be a top 10 Division 1 team come March in West Bloomfield.
This annual event is now sadly named in the honor of Sean Pollion, a long-time Petoskey coach who passed in the fall. Participating are two Up North teams, the host Northmen and Elk Rapids, and a pair of downstate squads, Freeland and Grand Ledge. Lots of young talent here, as three top 25 2026 prospects are featured: from Freeland 6-4 sophomore Wilson Huckeby and 6-6 sophomore Tristan Comer, and from Grand Ledge 6-7 sophomore Braylon James. The Northern teams are more veteran, with Elk Rapids and senior guard Haven Somers, and Petoskey with senior guard Shane Izzard and 6-4 senior Jimmy Marshall.
Saginaw Valley State University
The best NCAA D2 arena in the state plays host to the Louis O’Neil Classic, with seven games starting at 11:30 am. The most intriguing matchups are Flint Hamady, with explosive senior guard Jakobie Boose, against Saginaw Arthur Hill, which returns a now healthy 6-4 senior Lyna Brooks, and one of the most explosive soph guards in the state Boop Hardy; and a matchup of top 10 Division 2 Flint Powers and top 10 D3 Schoolcraft.
Twin brothers LaVelle and Lorenzo Guess were tremendous guards for Wayne in the late 1990s. LaVelle passed from ALS in 2019, and is honored with the LaVelle Guess Showcase — and another pair of terrific Zebra guards, sophomores Carlos Medock and Jaylohn Allen, who take on Romulus in the third of three games at 6 pm.
